Rev. Eugene Harold Vetter

Reverend Eugene Harold Vetter, 89, of Mazomanie, WI, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Craig K. Niemeier will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Worms. Visitation will be held one hour before time of service at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements. Reverend Vetter was born on Jan. 13, 1925, in Milwaukee, WI, to Julius William and Irma Clara (Heuer) Vetter. He was united in marriage to Joan Louise Bader on Aug. 6, 1950, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms, NE. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Mazomanie, WI; 10 children and spouses, Dr. Mary (husband David Sauchyn) of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; Susan (husband Jim Clark) of Wheaton, IL; Eugene Jr. (wife Caroline Carboni-Vetter) of Grasse, France; Dr. Alisen of Mazomanie, WI; Dr. James (wife Barbara Vetter) of Portola Valley, CA; Dr. Christine (husband Ramesh Subramanian) of Westport, CT; Dr. John (wife Aileen Vetter of Sun Prairie, WI; Dr. Sally (husband Victor Chen) of Tucson, AZ; Dr. David (wife Nodira Vetter) of Tacoma, WA;and Dr. Ann (husband John Dally) of Mazomanie, WI. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Marjorie Vetter of Golden City, MO, and his brother-in-law, Fred Bartel of Madison, WI. He was baptized at home by Rev. E.P. Dornfeld on Jan. 29, 1925. Eugene was conformed on April 10, 1938, at St. Marcus Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI, by Rev. E.P. Dornfeld. He graduated from Concordia High School and, in 1944, Concordia College in Milwaukee, WI. During summers from 1945 to 1950 Eugene attended Concordia teacher's Colleges in Seward, NE and Fort Wayne, IN and in June 1950, Eugene graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, with a Bachelor's Degree in Divinity. He also earned a Master's Degree in Science from Wayne State teacher's College in Wayne, NE in 1963. His pastorates include St. John's Lutheran Church in Ruma, IL from 1950-52, where he was also a teacher; St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Linkville, MI, 1952-56; St. John's Lutheran Church in New Haven, MI, 1956-59; Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, 1959-61, where he was an associate pastor; St. John's Lutheran Church, Battle Creek, NE, 1961-75; and lastly, Zion Lutheran Church in Gresham, WI and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stony Hill, Shawano, WI, a dual parish from 1975-90. Eugene also served as Circuit Counselor in Wisconsin and from 1976-90 as Chaplain at Shawano County Mission Society. From 1976-90 Pastor Eugene Vetter spoke at 11 Missouri Synod Lutheran District conferences and conventions throughout the central and eastern United States as well as Toronto, Canada. After retiring to Milwaukee, WI in 1990 Eugene assisted St. Peter-Immanuel Lutheran Church in Milwaukee with pastoral visitation for six years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Irma Vetter; his brothers, Rev. Donald Vetter and Rev. Harold Vetter; and his sister, Dr. Elaine Bartel.
