Noel G. Olin, 70, of St. Paul, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Joel Rathbun will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Arnold Cemetery in Arnold.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Olin chose to have his body cremated.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Olin was born on June 29, 1939, at North Platte, the son of Arden and Louise (Edwards) Olin.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda J. Olin of St. Paul.
He is also survived by two nephews, Brian and Ivey Olin of Kearney and Tim and Christy Olin of West Point; one niece, Christy and Dave Hoist of Huntington Beach, CA; four sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jackie and Maurice Scott of Boise, ID, Frances and Marion Scott of Arnold, Geraldine and Clark Sauer of Gladstone, MO, and Rickie and Steve McKnight of Albuquerque, NM; as well as many other nieces and nephews.
As a young boy Noel moved with his family to Grand Island where he attended Grand Island Public Schools. In 1953, he moved to Arnold, where he graduated from Arnold High School in 1957. During these younger years he played saxophone in a dance band that played in small towns throughout Central Nebraska. He then attended Kearney State College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in English in 1961.
He was united in marriage to Brenda J. Geiser on June 3, 1961, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold. The couple first lived in Wauneta where he taught and coached at Wauneta High School. In 1963, they moved to St. Paul, where he was an English Teacher at St. Paul High School for 37 years, retiring in 2000. He had also served as the High School Principal for several years in the late 1960’s. For many years he coached boy’s basketball and track, as well as, the golf team. For many summers he also coached American Legion Baseball teams.
He was a longtime member of the Nebraska State Education Association and a former member of the Elks in Grand Island.
In 1973, the couple moved north of St. Paul along the North Loup River. It was there that he enjoyed riding his airboat on the river, as well as, hunting and fishing of all types. Noel was also a longtime member of the St. Paul Country Club, where he enjoyed countless hours of golfing with his friends and was fortunate enough to have several hole-in-ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Marian Olin.
Memorials are suggested to the family to establish a Noel G. Olin Scholarship at St. Paul High School.
