Marvin M. Schwenk, 96, lifetime St. Libory resident, died peacefully with his family by his side, Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Martha Voigt will officiate. Military honors will be held at the church by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers and plants, the family suggests memorials be given to the United Methodist Church.

Marvin was born Jan. 8, 1928, on the family farm northwest of St. Libory, the son of Charles F. and Emma C. (Gulzow) Schwenk. He attended District No. 26 Howard County Rural School and farmed with his father.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1953.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn M. “Kathy” Rasmussen on March 20, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The couple farmed the Schwenk homeplace northwest of St. Libory.

In 1989, the couple moved to a home southwest of St. Libory and he retired from farming in 1992.

Kathy died on Feb. 22, 2013. Marvin later moved to the Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul and for the past year he had resided at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in St. Paul; a former member of the Grand Island Saddle Club; Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul; he was a 1955 original member of the St. Libory Volunteer Fire Department and had served on the St. Libory School Board for 15 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He and Kathy enjoyed dancing and traveling, which they did a lot of.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Bill Rehder of Florence, OR; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Becky Schwenk of St. Libory; three grandsons, Matt and Sarah Rehder of San Juan Island, WA, Cody and Maya Greywood of Omaha and Max Schwenk and Molly Welniak of St. Libory; Kathy’s siblings and spouses, Erma Rasmussen of St. Paul, Don and Marie Rasmussen of Hastings, John and Linda Rasmussen of Grand Island and Joyce Rasmussen of Lincoln.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue Bailey on Oct. 26, 2021; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Clara Schwenk; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Pat Evers and Lenore and Charles Winter; and Kathy’s father, Einar Rasmussen; mother, Marie Rasmussen McClelland; step-father, John McClelland; and two brothers-in-law, Ivan “Butch” Rasmussen and Stanley Rasmussen.
