Janice A. Mathis

August 24, 1942 — January 21, 2022

Janice A. Mathis, 79, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Libory, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.


Janice chose cremation, with private family graveside services at St. Libory’s Catholic Cemetery in St. Libory, at a later date.


Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.


Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.


Janice was born on Aug. 24, 1942, at Long Beach, Calif., the daughter of Ernie and Helen (Jacobsen) Kipp.


She grew up in St. Paul where she was a 1960 graduate of St. Paul High School.


She was united in marriage to Leon A. Mathis on March 5, 1962, at St. Libory. The couple lived on the Mathis family farm at St. Libory, where raised their three children. Janice worked for FedEx until her retirement in 2005. The couple moved to Grand Island in 2015.


She was a longtime member of St. Libory’s Catholic Church.


Janice loved the outdoors and nature, bird watching and animals. She enjoyed reading, camping and traveling with Leon, after their retirement.


She is survived by her children and spouses, Mike and Linda Mathis of St. Libory and Lisa and Daron Bean of St. Libory; three grandchildren and spouses, Wade and Jessica Mathis of Milford, Abby and Jordan Gall of Clarkson and Jacie and Benson Moul of Grand Island; four great-grandchildren, Walker and Skye Mathis and Landri and Leyton Gall; sister and husband. Kim and Brian Graviette of Hastings; sister-in-law, Sharon Mathis of Grand Island; brothers-in-law, Gary Mathis of Chapman and Dean Mathis of Grand Island; and nieces and nephews, Jordan Graviette of Omaha, Greg Mathis of Minnesota, Jill Mathis of Colorado and Kyla and Ryan Lilienthal and their children, Presley, Taylan and Cash, of Grand Island.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon on Jan. 30, 2019; son Tim on Sept. 26, 2017; her parents, Ernie Kipp and Helen Kipp Nowak; stepfather, Robert Nowak; brother, Chuck Kipp; and in-laws, Louis and Genevieve Mathis.
