Ernest E. Ziola, 86, of St. Paul died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Paplin, with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ziola was born on Nov. 9, 1927, at Loup City, the son of Louis and Regina (Grudzinski) Ziola.
He was united in marriage to Delores Wroblewski on Oct. 16, 1950, at Loup City. She preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 1990.
He is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Patricia and William Longo of Ord, Arlene and Stephen Kuligowski and Margaret and LeRoy Traudt, all of Lincoln, Lori Ziola of Elba and LaDonna and Marty Costello of St. Paul; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Allan Ziola of Loup City, LaVern Ziola of Osceola, Iowa, Marvin and Deb Ziola of Phillips and Darrell and Sue Ziola of Elkhorn.
He also leaves to cherish his memory 24 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Ernest grew up on the family farm north of Loup City where he attended Sherman County rural schools. Upon completing his education he farmed with his father. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from Jan. 1951 until Nov. 1952.
He and Delores farmed northeast of Loup City. The couple moved to Idaho in 1957 and moved back to Loup City in 1961. In 1963, they moved to a farm northeast of Ashton. Over the years Ernest worked for Missouri Valley in road and bridge construction and later for the Howard County roads department. In 1986, he began working as a custodian for Rose Lane Home in Loup City and later for Heritage Living Center in St. Paul, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul and was a former member and trustee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin.
Ernest loved polka music and time spent with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Diane Ziola; a sister, Tina Gappa; and a brother, Benny Ziola.
