Alberta was born at home in Arnolds Park, Iowa, on Sept. 25, 1926, the daughter of Ray and Marguerite (Hedrick) Glade. She graduated from North High in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from she moved with her parents to Grand Island, where she got a job at Consumers Electric (now the City of Grand Island), where she met her husband, Jerry.
She was united in marriage to Gerard L. “Jerry” Cordes on June 3, 1946, at St. Libory. In 1955, the couple moved to St. Libory. After her youngest child started school she went to work at First National Bank in Grand Island, where she worked for 25 years.
She was a member of the St. Libory's Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.
Alberta was a great cook, but never made dessert. If you were still hungry you had seconds. She would fry a dozen chickens for the many 4th of July celebrations that she and Jerry hosted for friends and family. She loved to play all kinds of cards, but St. Libory pitch was her favorite. Alberta loved football and baseball. She would watch a game on TV and have a radio in her ear listening to another game. One of her favorite sayings was, “I did the best I could with what I knew”.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Teresa Cordes of Surprise, AZ and Pat and Sharon Cordes of Yorba Linda, CA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Harold Fowler of Clermont, FL and Deb and Tim Pfeifer of Spalding; six grandchildren and spouses, Heather and BJ Hall, Heidi and Terry Benson, Jon and Marné Cordes, Adam and Shannon Cordes, Wyatt Pfeifer and Weston Pfeifer; six great-grandchildren, Adilynn, Colton, Tessa, Marshall, Lorelei and Isla; and one sister-in-law, Bev Glade of Des Moines, IA.
